Sitk Center Invites Community to Mingle, Muse and Munch with Kim Stafford

This summer, the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology will host a free series of artist and writer talks dubbed 'Mingle, Muse and Munch', designed to open the Sitka Center doors even wider to the local community. The events coincide with the Sitka Center Workshop Program and will feature instructors from those classes. “This is a great opportunity for our teachers to share more about their work beyond the classroom,” says Event Coordinator Mindy Chaffin, “in an atmosphere that feels really peer-to-peer and sincere.”

"Visiting other artist's studios is a favorite activity of mine," upcoming Sitka a la Road host Tallmadge Doyle says. "By visiting in person, you get to see and feel their work environment, and gain insight into an artist's thought process and how they construct work on a physical level. Getting to talk directly to artists about their work and work processes is, in my opinion, the best approach to gain deeper appreciation, insight, and understanding of their work."

Each year, the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology relies on the help of over 150 volunteers to put on events, keep up with office work, do facilities maintenance - even fundraise. "Without volunteers," says Executive Director Eric Vines, "there would be a much bigger gap between what we want to do and what we actually do." Program Manager Jalene Case agrees: "Without volunteers, we would be a shadow of who we are - they are a huge part of what makes Sitka's heart continue beating." On May 14, the Sitka Center will celebrate all those individuals who help the organization achieve so much.

The Sitka Center Presents "Winds and Waves" Faculty Concert

On April 29th, four internationally-renowned recorder players will perform for the Lincoln City area community, as part of the 13th annual 'Winds and Waves' recorder workshop hosted by the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology and sponsored by the Oregon Coast Recorder Society. Titled Thirteen Years of Music by the Sea, the performance will feature “Winds and Waves” faculty members Frances Blaker, Letitia Berlin, Cléa Galhano and Rotem Gilbert, on recorders of all sizes.

Community members are warmly invited to come visit the Sitka Center and meet our talented group of current Artists-in-Residence! The residents will share their work and talk about what brought them to the Sitka Center; the Sitka Center will provide its famous Macaroni and Cheese and a comfortable atmosphere in which to listen and engage with old and new friends, both!
Sitka Center Announces Ford Foundation-Supported Residency and Application Deadline

From 2011 to 2012, thanks to a grant from the Ford Family Foundation, the Sitka Center will be able to offer a special residency opportunity to practicing, mid-career, Oregon artists. The grant allows visual artists, who are over the age of thirty, have been actively making art for at least seven years, and are not currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program, to receive a stipend of $1,000 to $2,500 if accepted into the Sitka Center Residency Program.
'Comfy Studio' Fundraising Goal Met

In just two weeks, 177 Sitka Center community members raised over $20,000 for the 'Comfy Studio' Project. "We are rejoicing our good fortune to have so many amazing people supporting our work," said Executive Director Eric Vines. "Thank you! Thank you!" The project is part of the Sitka Center's larger campaign to raise $370,000 to complete much-needed campus renovations and repairs.
Sitka Center Hosts Siletz Tribe for Traditional Crafts and Art Workshop

Eight youths from the Siletz tribe spent two days at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology participating in the Siletz tribe’s Traditional Crafts and Art Workshop. For three years, the Sitka Center has donated the use of its facilities so these young tribal members can work with and learn from Native artists and craftspeople in the areas of Siletz weaving, ceramics and traditional bone carving.
Spring Residents Arrive at the Sitka Center

Sunshine poured over the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology’s campus as Bren Simmers, Josie Sigler, Phyllis Trowbridge and Shannon Berg arrived to begin their stays at Sitka as Artists-in-Residence. The Oregon coast, it seemed, was doing its best to provide inspiration to the four women, whose work is very much influenced by the natural world and our connections to it.

From now until May 14th, 2011, the Connie Hansen Garden in Lincoln City, OR, will be displaying artwork by local artists Mervin Cole, Cynthia Doyle, Shelia Griffie, and William Calvert, all of whom took a photography workshop together last year at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in Otis, OR.
