Born 5-May-52, Bradford, Pennsylvania Technique Often I decide to create a series of landscape paintings of a place I have no personal history with, having arrived there because of an interest in its preservation or simply happenchance. My mood may determine the direction I initially begin but once there, the natural rhythm influences the direction that I continue. Some days this means layers of charcoal sketches from various perspectives, other days, tiny drawings of birds, bugs and other shoreline minutia, or maybe some downy cottonwood seeds drifted into a scour pool will catch my eye. Days or weeks may pass in this way before I feel compelled to return to my studio to make oil paintings from these layers of drawings and notes. Interests I find the transition zones between land and water to be the most haunting and metaphorically rich. The quiet eroding powers of the water form the land, but at the same time the land forms a physical barrier and boundary that contains the water. This give and take relationship serves as metaphor for many opposing forces we, as individuals and society, deal with day to day. I am drawn to slow moving channels, estuaries, or marshes that possess this dynamism. The intimate nature and scale of these places arouses deep feelings of connectedness to the world that surrounds me which fuels my creative spirit. Favorite Place Along natural waterways I can explore in my kayak. Collections Various private collections across the U.S. Other information B.F.A. from P.N.C.A.
