Technique
Because my work is so much about Place, I use copies of USGS Topographical maps (both paper and metal) - each stained with something relevant to the idea; such as coffee, mud or dyes made from natural materials gathered in that place. Drawings and graphic images of human body systems, moon phases, etc., are sometimes layered on the maps using a variety of mixed media techniques. Found objects are collected from the place depicted on the map, or from the person(s) involved. The pieces are coated with acrylic medium and wax to protect the surfaces from dirt and sun.

Interests
My work is influenced by the philosophies of Deep Ecology, Bioregionalism and finding the Sacred in everyday life. I am currently exploring physical and emotional concepts of "Place". I am attempting to capture an event, an experience and/or the essence of a place, using elements of time (solar system charts, moon phases) and place (maps, collected items or "relics") combined with relevant quotes, graphic images and symbolic objects and materials. My formal training is in metalsmithing. I also enjoy making jewelry and working on commissioned pieces for clients that celebrate their personal, significant events, experiences, places and/or relationships.
