Gallery Froelick GalleryBorn 2-May-09, Belleville, Illinois Medium Oil on canvas on panel
www.robertgamblinstudio.com Technique I have been painting the landscape in oils for 30 years. I use the highest quality materials from support up through the varnish layer. Most of the works are done on linen laminated to braced wood panels, on oil grounds, using the finest artist oil colors. All of the materials used are made to my formulas. I paint with a chromatic palette originally used by the Impressionists. All paintings are begun in the landscape and then finished in the studio. Working out of doors gives the work a sense of place and the light of day. The studio work gives the paintings the emotions stirred up by the original scene. Interests David Foster, my master teacher at the University of Oregon, was a student of Maholy Nagy. While not a painter, he taught me that visual art is primarily a medium of communication. This implies a concern for the viewer and that one has something to communicate. Wolf Kahn is my last teacher. He is the student of Hans Hoffman, the master colorist of the Abstract Expressionist movement. Working with Wolf has allowed me to merge the 19th century genre of landscape painting with the conscious awareness of contemporary art. |
