I work with canvas or wood panels that are layered with additional pieces of canvas. These randomly shaped pieces of canvases are gessoed to the original support. Painting with thin layers of oil and alkyd (a modern resin medium) I create layers of transparency with glazes giving the painting a feeling of depth and light. The torn or cut edges of the layered canvas purposefully interrupt the illusion of the image--giving the painting a sculptural quality and creating dissonance between the image and the surface interruptions.
