Kiln Casting Glass Tiles, Teresa Kowalski
Two classes, 2 days each: beginning May 27, June 3 (ages 12 & older)
This hands-on application of kiln casting will include instruction in design basics, glass cutting and carving, and will introduce ways to create glass tiles by fusing nine layers of transparent tint glass into an open face mold. Each student will design and construct two glass tiles. Firing schedules and mold making instructions will be discussed.
This Divine Earth: A Nature Writing Workshop, Amy Minato
Saturday June 3–Sunday June 4 (Ages 16 & older)
From Rumi to Whitman we belong to a human heritage that discovers the sacred in nature. Be in a place that inspires spirit and practice translating such 'inexpressible' moments into words. Listen to nature writers sing the earth's praise. We will weave being outdoors with readings, discussions and writing in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Oil Painting: Technical and Practical Approaches, Cecilia Hallinan
Monday June 5–Friday June 9 (Ages 18 & older)
Learn the beginning principles of oil painting as a jumping board to exploration, innovation, and the pursuit of your individual voice. We will discuss the characteristics of color, paint mixing, brushwork, composition, texture, and decision-making that addresses the approach to work and final execution. Participants may bring works in progress and/or completed work for evening discussions.
Art by Accident/Use of Found Objects Inside-out, J. Fred Woell
Saturday June 10–Monday June 12 (Ages 18 & older)
Learn to create with found objects using tin cans and small wood boxes as a springboard to creating unique artwork. Instruction will focus on cold connections useful to assembling dissimilar found objects. The aim of the workshop will be to finish work and deal with the nature of time, circumstance, and serendipity in the creative process.
Painting with Colored Pencil, Gary Greene
Tuesday, June 13–Thursday, June 15 (Ages 16 & older)
Master colored pencil artist Gary Greene will discuss colored pencils, paper surfaces, tools, and techniques, beginning with the “foundation” colored pencil technique: layering. Students will advance to the painterly burnishing technique and the basics of water-soluble colored pencil. Come learn more about this amazing medium!
Events: Salmon River Estuary Research Project Potluck
The Sitka Center, The Salmon Drift Creek Watershed Council and the Siuslaw National Forest will be welcoming the team of graduate students studying the Salmon River Estuary this summer at a June 23 potluck dinner. Please email Katie Brehm at ccc@sitkacenter.org if you would like to learn more about this project or would like to join us for this potluck.
Events: Save the date for the McClelland Fund celebration!
This summer, we are pleased to offer our first Lois McClelland Memorial workshop, “The Visual Word” with Jan Owen. Established in 2004 in honor of former Sitka Center calligraphy instructor Lois McClelland, the Sustaining Fund in her name ensures ongoing yearly workshops and residencies in calligraphy in loving memory of a vibrant woman and talented artist whose caring knew no bounds. Join us on Friday, July 21 for a celebration of Lois’s life, the Lois McClelland Sustaining Fund, and the opportunities this Fund offers to the Sitka Center, its workshop participants, and residents. Details to follow in our June e-update.
