  • Welcome to our new Executive Director Douglas Beauchamp!

The Sitka Center for Art and Ecology is pleased to announce the appointment of Douglas Beauchamp as its new Executive Director effective July 1, 2006. Mr. Beauchamp replaces Executive Director Randall Koch, who resigned in December 2005 after 15 years of leadership.

Mr. Beauchamp has committed the majority of his career to support of the arts in Oregon. Prior to accepting the position at the Sitka Center, Douglas completed an 18-year tenure as Executive Director of the Lane Arts Council in Eugene Oregon, a regional arts agency serving Lane County.

“We are pleased to introduce and welcome Douglas as we look forward to an exciting new chapter in the life of the Sitka Center. Douglas brings a deep knowledge of and passion for the visual arts, combined with experience in the successful management of a non-profit organization,” said Board President Jan Skopil.

The selection of Douglas comes at the end of a rigorous national search, led by a Search Committee of committed community leaders and board members. The Sitka Center received 108 applications, indicating the high esteem and value that the organization holds for many in the national arts and ecology community.

Here are highlights of a few upcoming workshops:

The Nature Journal

Jude Siegel, Friday – Sunday, June 23-25, 2006 While working indoors and out, your awareness and confidence will grow as you fill your sketchbook with drawings, watercolor, and writing, inspired by the beauty of nature. Jude will provide simple effective ways to build your skills and ideas while encouraging your individual style and interpretation in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

The Unbound Book: Exploring Painting Techniques for Book Artists

Lisa Onstad, Sunday – Tuesday, July 9-11, 2006 Inspired by a simple set of flash cards, students will explore the possibilities of creating a narrative with unbound cards that can be read in many sequences and arranged in multiple configurations. During this three-day class, students will edition a set of flash cards to exchange with the class. These small cards will become the ground on which to experiment with a variety of painting techniques, such as working with stencils and beeswax varnish and creating exciting surface textures.

Capturing Nature in Mosaic

Mark Brody, Wednesday – Friday, July 26-28, 2006

Mosaic is the process of creating a whole from disparate parts. In this workshop, we will study and recognize the patterns and shapes we marvel at in nature. Beginning with a contour line drawing of a subject, we will set out to puzzle together broken pieces of colorful ceramic tile directly over this drawing. Later, the techniques of setting, grouting and sealing will be mastered to give a broad understanding of mosaics and teach all you need to know to create any indoor or garden mosaic.

NEW class offering, announced only on-line and in the e-update:

2D/3D: From page to pedestal: Pate de verre Vessels

Deborah Horrell, Monday – Friday, October 2 – 6, 2006 This workshop will begin with drawing to help students develop 3-dimensional forms. Selected drawings will be translated into hollow vessels through pate de verre. Mold making techniques will be demonstrated, and firing schedules discussed. Students will work with clay and plaster to make forms for mold making and will experiment with interpreting pencil drawings into monoprints. Participants do not need to be accomplished drafts people, but familiarity with clay modeling will be helpful.
