Residency Update

We have had some exciting news from two of our Spring 2006 residents.

Painter Deedra Ludwig recently completed an exhibition in Atlanta Georgia, with work created while at the Sitka Center. Deedra was delighted to report that her show completely sold out. Deedra comments, “I was just at the Hambidge Center in north Georgia and expressed to the staff what an incredible experience Sitka was and continues to be for me. My work has truly been transformed after the beauty, space to work and so much more.”

Writer Karen Piper completed a draft of her third book while at the Sitka Center. Her agent has since approved the book for press. Meanwhile, her second book Left in the Dust, is now available for purchase at www.powells.com.

Here are highlights of a few upcoming workshops:

From Naturalism to Abstraction: A Mixed-media Drawing
Exploration (Elizabeth Barnes)

Monday – Thursday, July 31 – August 3, 10 am – 4 pm
Age 18 and older; intermediate (some experience and skills in observational skills)
$245 plus $20 materials fee

This workshop will guide participants through the experience of observational drawing in the natural world to an understanding of how the observed patterns in nature inform both structures and process in creating abstraction.  A variety of mixed-media techniques will be demonstrated and used in a series of working drawings done both outdoors and in the studio.

Drawing Intensive Workshop (Larry Thomas)

Saturday – Tuesday, August 5-8, 10 am – 4 pm
Age 18 and older; all skill levels
$245 plus $15 materials fee

Participants in this workshop will explore many forms of drawing using a variety of techniques and materials to understand new ways of seeing familiar forms.  The students will begin by drawing plants, seedpods, shells, leaves, lichen, etc. in black and white directly from nature in the area surrounding Sitka Center.  Students will use charcoal, ink wash, charcoal/gesso, and ink/acrylic/gesso.  Larry will then work with students to enlarge the drawings.  Everyone will then take apart their drawings by either cutting or tearing and repositioning various components to develop a more personal and more dynamic interpretation of the natural forms.  Ultimately, the finished drawings will be the outcome of close and careful observation from nature and re-interpreting the subject as a more personal response to nature.

Digital or Film Photo Naturalist with Anne Rybak

Tuesday – Thursday, August 15 – 17
10 am – 4 pm
Age 16 and older; beginning level
$195 plus $22 materials fee

With the Cascade Head Nature Preserve as our backdrop, this workshop will offer the opportunity to enhance your creative and photographic skills while documenting the details and expanse of this spectacular ecosystem. In the field you will creatively explore various lenses, equipment, composition, and technique, while capturing the shifting luminosity of light on film or digital memory cards.  This workshop is designed for anyone stirred by nature with beginning photography skills and beyond. Be prepared for moderate hiking with your equipment (a day-pack and tripod are essential) through awe-inspiring scenery.
