Sitka Art Invitational Celebrates 14th Year, November 10-12, 2006

With over 600 pieces of art, created by 150 talented Northwest artists, will be on display and for sale at the Word Forestry Center in Portland. The show and sale of premier works of art opens to the public for free viewing on Saturday and Sunday (November 11-12), from 10am to 4pm. The featured artists this year are the 2005-06 Sitka Center for Art and Ecology Artists in Residence. Now in its 14th year, the Sitka Art Invitational raises money that will support yearlong Sitka Center for Art and Ecology programs, helping it sustain its mission of celebrating the intersection of art and ecology. With half the sales going to the artists, the exhibit also helps support regional artists. An Opening Night Artist's Party, Friday, November 10, from 6-10pm, (Tickets $35) offers food and wine, music, and a lively atmosphere.

Call or email Sitka, 541-994-5485, info@sitkacenter.org for tickets or more information.

Ecology research and environmental education at Sitka Center

The Lower Salmon River Project

Sitka Center has been an active participant in the Lower Salmon River Project, a restoration planning process in the estuary that Sitka calls home. A multi-disciplinary team of graduate students, led by the Sitka Center's Americorps volunteer Katie Brehm, provides a historical landscape perspective, and characterizes current ecological, cultural, and political conditions in the study area. The assessment project was completed in August and final project report has been published.

For more information, see our projects page.

Crowley Creek Educational Project

The Crowley Creek Educational Project involves young people from the local schools to help build a demonstration hands-on watershed monitoring and restoration program on the McKee Meadow, which includes a portion of Crowley Creek, and near Sitka Center and the Salmon River.

For more information, see our projects page.

For some details and pictures, see http://careertech.us/summer_program/ and the Crowley Creek Project.

Program Manager Job Opportunity

An opening for a full-time Program Manager was announced by Sitka Center in early October. This new position will begin in December and expands the current half-time Program Coordinator role, as Dee Moore plans to retire in December after many years of fine work with Sitka Center.
