Category Archives: Douglas-fir Plot
Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce, and western hemlock dominate this site. The understory is typical of coastal forests, rich in moss, lichen, fern, shrub and herb species. Early foresters recognized the importance of setting up plots in “natural” stands to learn how forests change and grow over time. The Douglas-fir plot is one of twelve one-acre plots established in the Cascade Head Experimental Forest (CHEF) during the early 1930s.
