Workshop Overview

Participants will sculpt small-scale stoneware clay figures with an average size of eight inches. Instruction and demos will help with proportions, balance and expressive poses. Small, flexible, wooden mannequins will be used to help guide our sculpting. We will also roll out slabs for hand-building clay boxes or textured ledges. These will support figures suitable for wall hangings or desktop displays. Participants will leave their pieces to be bisque fired by Sitka staff and will return at a later date to pick up their pieces ready to take home for glazing.

About the Instructor(s)

Jeff is a retired science teacher turned studio potter. Creating, experimenting and playing with clay for 25 years, he is a thrower and hand-builder. Jeff has taught ceramics classes and workshops at Oregon State University and in his own studio near Philomath, Oregon. His focus is on clay figures and vessel forms with surface textures, decorative slips and inlays. Enthused about atmospheric firings, he uses a soda gas kiln and typically fires pieces more than once.
