Workshop Overview

Participants will be invited to paint a number of different landscapes and seascapes creatively, using photographs from various locations around Oregon. We will go outdoors to make sketches and paint a study based on them. In the studio participants will learn to use the fundamentals of design by cropping images, simplifying objects and painting value studies to create a strong image. Katia will guide you through basic palette color choices and show you how to mix colors using simple color theory. She will offer individual instruction to each participant, covering the fundamentals of painting including composition, values, color and edges, and offer advice on handling the medium. Participants will learn the essentials of oil/acrylic painting and become comfortable with solvents (for oils), oil/acrylic mediums, brushes and paints.

About the Instructor(s)

Katia is a Russian born, award-winning oil painter. She has lived on the Oregon Coast since 2008. She paints mostly from life, plein air or in her studio in Lincoln City. She exhibits at Rowboat Gallery and Volta Gallery. In addition to her painting and teaching, she is busy raising a child.

Materials List: Students Bring

• Note: Please feel free to bring whatever colors of paint you prefer. The following is a list of basic color palette I recommend:

   Titanium White

    Cadmium Yellow Light

    Cadmium Yellow Medium

    Cadmium Red Light

    Alizarin Crimson

    Ultramarine Blue

    Phthalo Blue

Any Black (Ivory, Lamp, Mars, Payne's Gray etc.)

• Brushes- any good-quality brush will do. I recommend Robert Simmons Signet or Aspen by Princeton series 6500 flats or brights, sizes 2-6

• Palette knife

• Palette - bring whatever palette suits you. I like wood. Disposable paper palette will work. Make sure you will have enough mixing space.

• Canvases or boards sizes 6" x 8" or larger depending on how large you want to work (6-10) You can cut Masonite boards and gesso them. Canvas pad is ok, just make sure you bring tape and support to make it easier for you to paint on.

• Odorless paint thinner for oil painters (I use Gamsol by Gamblin)

• Paper towels or rags (I like old t-shirts)

• Sketchbook

• Black and gray markers or graphite pencils

• Color wheel

• Oil/acrylic medium if you already have it

Optional:

• Old shirts to paint in or aprons to protect your clothes

• Your photo references

• Value Chart

• Easel

• Gloves

• Wet painting carrier for transporting oil paintings
