Workshop Overview

Photographs have always told stories: some known, some forgotten... some are total mysteries. Fiber artist Maude Anne May invites you to join her in creating your own hand-stitched photo-collage story. Working with a favorite photo from your phone, computer or family album you will learn how to print images directly onto linen and then make a fabric collage embellished with hand embroidery, fabric scraps, notions, colored pencil and more. This one-day class will give you the knowledge to continue making hand or machine stitched photo- collages at home.

About the Instructor(s)

Maude Anne May is a collage artist – layering images utilizing hand and machine stitching along with photography. Compelled to create visual stories she combines discarded snapshots, copyright-free Library of Congress images and her own photographic works creating both simple and complex fabric art. Maude strives to move the viewer towards discovering and honoring the mysteries of the people, ideas, places and possessions that were once deemed precious and have now been left behind.

Maude has been making art in one form or another since childhood – stitching pre-printed samplers, fabricating elaborate collage drawings and sewing tiny outfits for her troll dolls. With advanced degrees in ceramics, textiles and photography, her passions have led her in many directions and her career has encompassed a wide variety of professions: pastry chef, art director, location scout, miniature golf course designer, photo stylist and paint-color consultant. For over 20 years, as the owner of Spark Art & Design, Maude worked with clients nation-wide; designing invitations, favors and collateral for corporations, non-profits and private individuals.
