Workshop Overview

Indigo is as changeable as the moon - capable of whisper pale shade and deep darkness. Using fold, clamp and reserve techniques students will learn ways to create patterns while playing with a limited number of moon phase clamps to create dark and light values. Intentional orientation of designs on cloth will be practiced. Skills are transferable to many other design options. Information on making and keeping an indigo vat will be presented. Students will make several samples and one larger piece.

Note: Workshop is compatible with previous day’s Indigo Flowers workshop for students wanting more time to explore.

About the Instructor(s)

Iris Sullivan Daire is an artist and naturalist dyer who uses site specific pigments and dyes to add new layers of meaning to the narrative of her work. She relishes using science, metaphor and story to bring the materials to life while teaching.

Iris lives with her family next to the Columbia River in Astoria, Oregon. She grows traditional dye plants and has been quietly mapping the hidden colors contained within the native and invasive plants of the North Oregon Coast. She holds a BFA in fiber arts from University of Oregon and has been teaching for over 20 years.
