Workshop Overview

In this one-day letter carving workshop, participants will learn to carve recessed letters in wood using a single, simple knife. This workshop will begin with basic letter design and then translate into terms and procedures. These techniques will help participants learn how to work with wood grain and texture to make the right cuts to achieve the curves, shapes, and shadows that bring letters into beautiful life and light. These skills can be applied to household woodenwares such as spoons and bowls, as well as signs, placards, and decorative household details. We'll also talk about sourcing good materials and tools, blade maintenance, and sharpening.

About the Instructor(s)

Kiko's been carving since he was ten and at seventeen he went to Italy to carve marble and has since worked in construction, community development, publishing, education and the arts. Ten years ago Bill Coperthwaite introduced him to the joys of carving greenwood, and he now makes and sells a variety of spoons, bowls, plates and other beautiful household containers, tools and wares.
