Workshop Overview

Generate new directions for your painting practice in this painting workshop focused on beginnings. Participants will practice new methods of gathering and transforming source material with the goal of creating an archive of preliminary studies from which to begin new painting projects. Methods of generating and organizing an image bank for new work will be demonstrated. Collage, drawing methods, the use of free online digital software, phone photography and oil and acrylic painting are some of the approaches that will be addressed. Group reflection on the process will aid participants in determining new visual and conceptual directions with an emphasis on accessing personally meaningful ideas to pursue. Slide presentations of contemporary painters and methods will be included. Participants can expect to finish the workshop with multiple \"studies\" and the opportunity to begin one or more new works.

About the Instructor(s)

Michelle Ross makes paintings out of a variety of materials in order to conjure a physical record and poetic response to being in the world. She is the head of the Drawing and Painting Department at the Oregon College of Art and Craft, Portland. Ross is represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland, Oregon. She received her MFA from Washington State University in Pullman.

ESSENTIAL:

• Preferred drawing, painting and collage materials

• Note: only Gamblin gamsol solvent is suggested to be used for oil painting with a

lidded glass jar for storage and transportation

• Scissors

• Xacto knife

• Glue stick

• Rulers

• Found collage material

• Laptop computer, tablet and/or smartphone

• A selection of appropriate papers for oil and acrylic painting and for drawing and collage exercises
