Workshop Overview

Create hand-built, abstract clay sculptures that are inspired by the natural world. Work created will be abstract rather than representational, reflecting the thoughts and feelings coming from the observations of nature (clouds, sky, waves, ocean, rocks, mountains, Salmon River Estuary area, etc.).

Hand building techniques will be demonstrated: coiling, pinching and slab. Students will try techniques and then choose one they would like to explore. The practice of sketches to be used as self notes will be encouraged.

Works will be bisque fired, then can be wood fired for a fee.

About the Instructor(s)

Ruri is originally from Japan and has been working with clay for 37 years in Sheridan, Oregon. She built a wood-fire ana-nobori kiln (a modified anagama kiln that has an extra chamber added) 10 years ago, called FuuKooGama, in which she does 7-10 day firings. Her inspiration comes from nature and all kinds of relationships on all levels of lives. She has been promoting international exchange in woodfiring for the last several years.
