Image and Word: The Art of the Artist Book

A highly versatile form of expression, an artist book extends into creating a conceptual space, where words and imagery enhance each other, adding to the interpretation of the art form. We will create artist books that have content expressed in both imagery and words. Participants will learn basic printmaking techniques and structures for book making. We will explore sequence in visual and verbal narratives, creating the unique art form of an artist’s book.

Jennifer L. Anderson is a book artist and printmaker working in many of the printmaking disciplines, primarily intaglio, relief printing and stone lithography. She has exhibited throughout New England and Central California, and her work is in private collections nationwide. Anderson has a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Connecticut and completed graduate course work in printmaking and education from Central Connecticut State University and the University of Connecticut. She is currently studying to be a Great Books Scholar.

• Bone folder

• X-acto knife (Olfa knife) with extra blades

• Metal ruler

• Small triangle with a 90 degree angle

• Image source material (photographs, sketchbooks, drawings, etc.)

• Writing source material (poems, quotes, journals, etc.)

• Papers: colored collage papers, decorative papers, Japanese papers, watercolor papers

• Watercolors/acrylic/gouache/brushes: you will have the opportunity to create images in your favorite medium – and also to add color to images created using printmaking techniques

• Cutting mat

(Online Participants will be shipped a kit of materials prior to class.)

• Book Board: sized and cut, enough to create 3 structures

• Decorative papers for the covers (randomly selected, enough to cover the three structures)

• Rives BFK paper: 1 full sheet (trimmed to 1/4 pieces)

• Arches paper: 1 full sheet (trimmed to 1/4 pieces)

• Stonehenge paper: 1 full sheet (trimmed to 1/4 pieces)

• Bookbinding needle and thread

• Small bottle of PVA glue

• Foam printmaking plates
