Workshop Overview

The marriage of watercolor with India ink can be magical. In this three-day workshop we will explore how to build successful value contrasts before applying watercolor washes and details over our paintings. On day one, we will begin looking at different pen strokes and the ways ink techniques are used in painting, and then apply these techniques to a piece to be completed with watercolor. On days two and three, we will explore textures and pen and ink in a more freestyle way. We will also create our own small watercolor journal to use with our new watercolor and ink techniques.

About the Instructor(s)

Angela is an award-winning watercolorist and instructor and a juried member of several art societies. She began teaching acrylics in 1984 and studied in oil from 2002 to 2003. In 2006 she changed directions and studied watercolor techniques in Florence, Italy. She began teaching watercolor classes and workshops in 2008. Angela’s watercolor, Blackberry Reflection, is featured on the cover of this year’s Sitka catalog.

Materials List: Students Bring

• Archival black ink pens – waterproof (very important) - Archival ink pens come in various sizes: .005, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 for example. You can purchase a set for a great price at Dick Blick and other fine art stores - Here are some suggested brand names:

  Faber Castell

• One small bottle of waterproof India ink

• One white gel pen

• One full sheet of Arches 140 pound hot press or cold press paper 22" x 30" (not broken down, we will need a small portion of the full sheet to create the journal so it must be in it’s full size). Hot press is smoother and will give more even lines however, I use cold press and it works just fine.  

• One small piece of 300 pound Arches watercolor paper (for the cover of your journal) - the size should be big enough to get two 4" x 6" pieces out of it.

• Your regular watercolor supplies – brushes, paints, palette, pencil, eraser, paper towels, etc.

• Images to work from


• Colored archival ink pens

• Sepia Pens – give a nice vintage look
