India Ink with Watercolor: How to Avoid Those Mid-Tone Blahs

Workshop Overview
three-day workshop we will explore how to build successful value contrasts before applying watercolor washes and details over our paintings. On day one, we will begin looking at different pen strokes and the ways ink techniques are used in painting, and then apply these techniques to a piece to be completed with watercolor. On days two and three, we will explore textures in ink in a more freestyle way. We will also begin painting with washes of India ink to set some values and then add layers of watercolor.

Materials List: Students Bring
• Archival black ink pens - waterproof (very important) - Archival ink pens come in various sizes: .005, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 for example. You can purchase a set for a great price at Dick Blick and other fine art stores - Suggested brand names: Micron Sakura Pigma, Staedltier, Prismacolor, Faber Castell
• One small bottle of waterproof India ink
• One white gel pen
• One full sheet of Arches 140 pound hot press or cold press paper 22"x30" (not broken down, we will need a small portion of the full sheet to create the journal so it must be full size). Hot press is smoother and will give more even lines however, I use cold press and it works just fine.
• One small piece of 300 pound Arches watercolor paper (for the cover of your journal) - the size should be big enough to get two 4"x6" pieces out of it.
• Watercolor supplies:
o Brushes
o Paints, palette
o Pencil
o Eraser
o Paper towels, etc.
• Images to work from
Additional items Online Participants Bring:
• PVA Glue for journal
• Ribbon for journal ties
Optional:
• Colored archival ink pens
• Sepia Pens – they give a nice vintage look
