Workshop Overview

In this three-day workshop, we will make multiple paintings, learning to layer color and imagery with paper, paint, pens and pencils. Responding to Sitka's spectacular setting, imagery of local flora and fauna will make their way in-between abstract layers. Artists of any level will be reinvigorated by this playful workshop experience.

About the Instructor(s)

Annamieka Davidson is a Portland-based artist. Her paintings explore themes of hope and healing with imagery of humanity and the natural world. She brings energy and a love of artmaking to her workshops and students will feel encouraged to find their own voice and experiment with new techniques. Annamieka earned her BFA degree from the University of Oregon in 2007 and spent the year following her BFA working at Sitka in 2007 to 2008. Each Summer she returns to Sitka to teach painting. She offers online classes and resources on her website.

Materials List: Students Bring

ESSENTIAL:

• Your own brushes suitable for acrylic paint - a variety of sizes

• Small and Large surfaces for painting.

4 small surfaces. I recommend cradled wood panels for your small surfaces. 8"x10" or 9"x12" wood panels work nicely.

2 large surfaces. I recommend either wood panels or stretched canvas for your large surfaces. 18"x24" or 24"x30" are great manageable larger sizes.

• Colors of acrylic paint that you love. At minimum I recommend titanium white, and carbon black, and then choose a color or two each of: blue, violet, red, orange, yellow, green. Choose colors that delight you; don't worry about having them all - I will also bring many colors of paint to share.

• Palette – this can be anything. A tupperware lid or an old plate works well.

• Collage medium - acrylic gel medium, acrylic matte medium, or mod podge.

• Collage paper - 5-10 different decorative papers that you find beautiful.

• Water-soluble pencils. Two water-soluble pencils - I recommend black and white. My favorite kind is called the Stabilo "all" pencil but any water-soluble or watercolor pencil will work.

• Paint pens - At least one fine-tip acrylic paint pen for drawing detail. If you only buy one color, buy a white paint pen. Posca and Molotow are my favorite brands of acrylic paint pens.

• Any of your other favorite pens and pencils and a pair of scissors.

• Rags and a vessel for water for your brushes at your table

• Painting Apron or Smock

OPTIONAL:

• Heat gun or hair dryer for quickly drying layers of your paintings

• Additional surfaces for painting. If you are a fast painter or want the option to make more paintings over the weekend, bring additional surfaces!

Materials List: Provided by Instructor(s)

• Materials specific for the techniques being demonstrated and a range of colors of acrylic paint.
