Workshop Overview

This workshop engages memory-based writing in direct relation to Sitka's two core ecological communities—forest and ocean. Together we will initiate and enact a deep conversation about the ways in which memory shapes language, and how language transmits memory. Forest meets river, then river meets ocean to form estuary, all of which nest fresh memory, recurring memory and inadvertent memory. We will write together from prompts in and out of the studio and read aloud from our works while studying models by published writers like Allison Cobb, C.A. Conrad and Margo Jefferson. At the end of the workshop, we will make small zines and host a group reading. The goal is to draft a substantial beginning for a memoir, supported by a sustainable work plan to continue writing beyond the classroom.
