Monoline Lettering Techniques - online

Monoline lettering is a great way to explore the art of hand lettering without the added challenge of working with complicated tools. In this class we will learn several styles of monoline lettering that use Speedball B-nibs including the Art Nouveau lettering of Rennie Mackintosh, the architectural lettering of Frank Lloyd Wright and others. We will also explore different ways of working with letters that can be applied to other calligraphic styles and tools. This workshop is appropriate for all levels of experience and is ideal for those who are new to lettering arts.

Cora Pearl started studying calligraphy at age 11 and has been doing calligraphy and hand lettering ever since. She has a BA in Art and Art History from Oberlin College. Cora works as a full time calligrapher and teacher of lettering arts. She teaches calligraphy and hand lettering at Portland Community College and teaches independent workshops, classes and private sessions. She has taught at several calligraphy conferences including Letters of Joy, IAMPETH, Letterfest, Typecon, Letterworks and Letters California Style. Cora also does calligraphy commissions in addition to her teaching.

• Prang watercolor set of 16 colors

• Higgins Eternal Black Ink

• 12" T-square and/or 12" ruler

• ¼" Watercolor Flat Brush

• ¾" Watercolor Flat Brush

• Guideline sheets (made to 9"x12")

• Canson Pro-Layout Marker paper 9"x12"

• Pebeo Drawing Gum

• 2B pencil

• Arches hot press 140lb. watercolor paper 22"x30" cut down to nine 6"x9" pieces

• Small water container

• Scotch Magic Tape ¾" width

• Small tortillion (blending stick)

• Sumi ink

• Paper clips

• Pipettes

• Nib loading brushes (round watercolor size 6)

• Guidelines will be emailed before class begins. Please print before beginning of class. Plan enough time to have a print shop or friend print for you if you do not have a printer.
