Workshop Overview

In this process-oriented workshop, we will explore several photo transfer techniques to transform digital and phone photographs into unique art pieces. Learn ways to transfer images to a variety of substrates that include wood, different types of paper and canvas. Create a small book of transfers and experiment with emulsion lifts. Work with images you have already taken or shoot new images while at Sitka. Each participant will leave with several transfers and a hand-bound book of their images.

About the Instructor(s)

Nancy Abens is a visual artist and educator living in Portland, Oregon. She is an avid birdwatcher, gardener and is deeply inspired by the natural world. She works primarily in photo based applications such as image transfers, photo intaglio and alternative processes such as cyanotype, VanDyke and Gum Bichromate. She has taught all forms of photography to thousands of high school students in the Portland area. She loves teaching and has an experimental, process-oriented approach. She holds a BA in Fine Art Photography and an MEd in teaching.

Materials List: Students Bring

All Participants will provide instructor with 7 digital files of images they want to work with prior to the beginning of the workshop  Instructions on how to size the images and other editing information will be sent to Participants.  

In-Person Participants Bring:

OPTIONAL: 

• Small boards for extra transfers (cradled or uncradled birch panels work best)

• Watercolor paper 

• Laptop computer

• Own bookbinding tools

• Camera

Online Participants Bring:

• Extra 6"x6" cradled birch panels and canvas boards

• Watercolor and printmaking papers (1 large sheet of each is fine)

• Purell hand sanitizer

• Basic bookbinding tools - big eye needles, an awl, thread, decorative paper, glue, and mat board  

• Heavy Body Gel medium

• Heat gun or hair dryer

• Liquid acrylic for painting boards. (I like to use a pearlescent or metallic one.)

All participants will receive an art kit with the following items: (Online Participants will have the following kit shipped to them before class begins)

• 2 – 6"x6" cradled birch panels

• Printed digital files

• Transfer solution and foam brush

• Power print medium

• Stone paper

Extra Materials Instructor Provides for In-Person Participants:

• Extra DASS and INKAID Transfer Film, Transfer Solutions

• Extra 6"x6" and other sizes of cradled birch panels and canvas boards

• Purell hand sanitizer

• Several sheets of watercolor and printmaking papers

• Citrasolv

• Power Print medium

• Mat board

• Decorative papers

• Basic bookbinding tools

• Some acrylic paints 

• Brushes

• Electric frying pan
