Workshop Overview

Learn to create beautiful, marbled papers using Sumi inks dropped from small paintbrushes into a tray of water and printed on rice paper. Discover how to develop one or more marbled papers into a finished painting using simple collage and painting methods.

About the Instructor(s)

Liz Walker, who creates marbled paintings in her studio in Portland Oregon, began as a watercolor painter and then discovered marbling (both acrylic and suminagashi) in 2008. Her work has been exhibited widely in regional and national shows; Liz has successfully taught marbling, acrylic and watercolor workshops for nearly a decade.

Materials List: Students Bring

• A small pair of scissors for cutting collage papers.

• A full roll of absorbent paper towels such as Viva or Bounty is important (paper towel sheets can be reused when dry).

• Inks are non-toxic but can temporarily stain fingers and clothes, so an apron is recommended.

• Plastic gloves are optional.

• For day 2, you will need 2 to 4 substrates (these can be 140lb printmaking or old watercolor paper or small gessoed canvases) no smaller than 5" x 7" and no larger than 11" x 15" to support the marbled rice papers that we will collage on to the substrate(s).

• Reference drawings (examples: birds, figures, flowers) if you have them otherwise simple drawings will be provided for you.

• 8 oz white glue such as Elmer's

OPTIONAL and encouraged:

• You can bring any other non-glossy papers that you would like to try to marble, such as old sheet music, book pages, or light-colored rice papers. All papers should be 11" x 15" or smaller and should be able to withstand being immersed in water without falling apart.

Materials List: Provided by Instructor(s)

• 6-color Sumi ink set (for students to keep)

• 50 sheets of Sumi rice paper per student, plus 15 sheets of heavier papers suitable for marbling

• Marbling trays and tools

• Matte medium and large brushes used to collage rice papers onto substrates

• Reusable stencils for creating subject matter on the marbled papers

• Acrylic paints, brushes for developing papers into paintings
