The Sketchbook Habit

An active sketchbook practice promotes creativity and artistic growth. In a sketchbook, responding to varied prompts, you will explore mark-making, texture, and color with gouache, brush pens, water-soluble pencils, and markers. The sketchbook becomes a collection of your unique art making processes. You will also respond to writing prompts. Together, these exercises are a departure point for reflecting on your artistic goals and are intended to help you clarify who you are as an artist. This workshop is about what excites you, what directions you want to explore. Prompts will also be offered to support an ongoing sketchbook habit post-workshop.

Susan Moss has been marking on surfaces since a child: on paper tablecloths, fabric, archival paper, large and small. Her drawing and textile work has been exhibited in over eighty venues. At Fort Lewis College (Durango, CO), she has taught all levels of drawing, contemporary textile art and seminars focused on developing visual ideas.

• 2 watercolor brushes

• 4 gel pens, different colors & types

• 1 water-soluble pencil

• 1 superior graphite pencil

• 5 brush pens, different colors & types

• 1 Japanese album sketchbook

• 1 Japanese watercolor set w/ 6 pans & water brush

• 1 workshop booklet w/ prompts, inspiration, & post-workshop support
