Workshop Overview

The Pacific Coast temperate rain forest in which the Sitka Center is located is one of the most productive forest regions in the world. This workshop will start with studio-based instruction on the basics of tree classification and identification, as well as a discussion of the ecosystem and economic values of this amazing forest region. Most of the workshop will be spent at nearby field sites to observe and discuss the information given in the studio, and learn about the basics of tree growth.

About the Instructor(s)

Peyton "Pete" Owston has a doctorate in forest science from the University of Michigan and has lived and worked in Oregon for many years. He retired from a career with the U.S. Forest Service that spanned 40 years and took him to forests in many other parts of the country and the world. Pete's research emphasis was on nursery practices and reforestation.  His first working trip to the Oregon Coast was in 1968, and he and his wife have lived here full-time since 1997.

Materials List: Students Bring

We will start the day at the Sitka Center with an overview and slide presentation. After lunch (bring your own), we will go to the field by car pool. There will be some walking involved. Some of it may be up and down, but we will move slowly. I suggest that you wear hiking shoes or boots. We may do some off-trail walking, so please wear long pants. Long-sleeved shirts would also be a good idea. Also, cameras and/or binoculars might add to your enjoyment of the workshop.

We’ll go to the field rain or shine, so please come prepared for Oregon Coast weather. Even if the forecast calls for a nice day, please remember that near the coast it may be cool (or cold), windy, and misty.

If you want to have a tree identification guide to bring with you, I recommend "Trees to Know in Oregon" by Edward C. Jensen. The latest edition, published in 2010, can be purchased on-line from the Oregon State University Extension Service for $18. I will bring several copies with me to share, so having your own is not required.
