New 2-Week Writer's Residencies Awarded
Since our campus is growing this spring with two new cottages, our Artist-In-Residency Program is growing too. The first residents to relish the new space will be the recipients of the 2-Week Writer's Residencies.

Summer Intern Position
We're preparing for our 2010 Workshop Program and the Summer Intern position is now open. (The link will provide a detailed description and application.) Essentially, this zany, organized, friendly, flexible, strong, creative person will live at Sitka from May 5th to October 8th and will, almost, single-handedly keep the 100+ workshops flowing from day-to-day. Does this description make you tingle with excitement? If so, applications are due by March 31st.

Kids learning about Salmon
A public art piece for Lincoln City titled, "Schooling Salmon, " is being created via a partnership between the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, Let There Be Arts, Oceanlake 3rd grade classes and select Taft High School students. "Schooling Salmon" is funded by a grant from Lincoln City and it's Public Arts Commission.
The month of February is abuzz with learning about salmon and an integration of art curriculum for each 3rd grader at Oceanlake School. Taft High School is helping cut cedar into salmon shapes and Oceanlake School will paint each of the 60 fish. The finished "Schooling Salmon" will first be exhibited in the White Room Gallery at the Lincoln City Cultural Center March 7th - 21st and then installed in it's permanent location within the city, placement TBA. All are invited to the gallery on Sunday March 7th to meet the artists during the Opening Celebration from 1-3pm.
This photo is a painting created by Mary Beth Guerena's class last week after their "Annie Painter Masterpiece Painting" lesson and learning about spawning salmon in preparation for this project.
Sitka Offers Art Workshops for Kids
As an experiment, the Sitka Center is partnering with the City of Lincoln City and the Lincoln City public schools to offer a couple of art workshops for elementary school kids. One workshop will feature open enrollment to make Silk Banners that will be hung in the Lincoln City Community Center. The other will be offered to the 3rd grade classes at Ocean Lake Elementary and will feature the creation of Cedar Plank Salmon. The finished Salmon will be shown in a gallery opening at the Lincoln City Cultural Center and then hung in public parks around Lincoln City. These projects are mostly funded by Public Art dollars from Lincoln City's Public Arts Committee. Sitka is also looking for donations to offset the administrative costs of running this program. New Carved Wood Posts
Each new cabin at the Sitka Center has space for 2 carved posts. Greg Rice and Rebecca Welti generously donated 4 8X8 cedar posts and had them shipped by barge from Alaska. Now we need to raise $9,500 by July 15 to pay for their carving. Artist, Jay Haavik has created an amazing design for each post (see sample above). You can participate in adding this artistic element that will complete the cabins by donating to this project. Donate Now
A New Place to Sit
Sitka has some matching grants in the works. One of our biggest complaints last year was that our workshop chairs are uncomfortable. We agree. So help us buy some new chairs. We need to raise $1000 in order to get a $3500 match from a local foundation. Donate Now
New Back-Up Generator
We lose electricity multiple times per year at Sitka. Beyond turning out the lights, it shuts down all of our computers, our phones, and our web server for workshop registrations. Our backup batteries can keep us going for about 30 minutes...anything longer than that and Sitka goes dark. We have applied for a grant that will allow us to purchase a generator that is designed to power electronic equipment for up to 14 hours. But we need to raise $1300 to secure the $3500 matching grant. Donate Now
Construction Update
The new buildings are coming along nicely. The windows are in, the plumbing is in, electricity is in, and the siding is starting to go on the upper cabin.
This week, the new patio stones will get installed along with the wheelchair ramps that allow access to the lower cabin. Stop by and check out our progress.
Both cabins will be finished by mid-March. We'll have a grand opening ceremony this August during our Sitka 40th celebration.
2010 Workshops
The 2010 Workshop Catalogs will be mailed by February 1st. We're excited about the offerings this year and hope you will be too! Registration opens for members on February 16th and for non-members March 1st.
2010-2011 Artist-In-Residency Program
Applications for the 2010-2011 Artist-In-Residency Program are due April 23, 2010.
Volunteer at Sitka
We are a community of people who believe in the power of art and nature in making our world a brigher place to live.
Volunteering is one of the many ways you can support the Sitka community.
Consider the volunteer positions we share on our website or visit with us to talk about your ideas, talents, and skills. We will be grateful for your donation of time and energy.
Volunteer for Recorder Workshop
This volunteer position is for a specific time period of May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. During this 3-day recorder workshop located at the Sitka Center, the Oregon Coast Recorder Society serves lunch each day. The voluneer will assist in the preparation and clean-up from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This is a fascinating and fun group of people. The first weekend of May each year, 45 recorder players come together at Sitka to play their hearts out. We look forward to hearing their beautiful music and laughter! I can almost guarantee that volunteering to help out with lunch will be a blast.
